Steps to De-worm the Horse Using Paste Form of Treatment

To administer any treatment in proper way ensures that the pet has accumulated its entire ingredients and will be benefited undoubtedly. There are countable treatments that controls, treats and prevents the horses from various parasites. Common mode of treatment for horses is chosen as a paste most of which are the de-wormers. However, the effect of this de-wormer will remain only if you know how to administer it in the correct manner.

Here are steps in which you can easily administer the pastel treatment to the horses.

  1. Tie up the horse safely and ensure that he doesn’t contain any form of feed in his mouth.
  2. Now, turn the knurled ring that is present on the syringe’s plunger 1/4th to the left side and slide it to the weight marking.
  3. Now when the weight is marked, turn the ring ¼th on the right side to lock it.
  4. Remove the cover from the syringe tip and insert that tip at an angle of 45 degrees into the corner of the horse’s mouth.
  5. Spread the dose of the paste across the backside of his tongue. Don’t deposit just a single lump or else the horse will spit it out.
  6. After you dose, at that moment only, raise the horse’s head for few seconds. This action is to ensure that he swallows the paste easily.

The best way to determine if your horse requires de-worming or not is through a faecal exam, in which the vet examines the feces. The vet checks the presence of worm eggs, and the eggs are counted. A faecal egg count enables to strategize the de-worming program to prevent infections.

Also, performing egg counts before carrying out the de-worming treatment, is helpful to perform an egg count 10-14 days post de-worming. This evaluates the efficiency of the de-wormer used. Usually, foals and younger horses, horses undergoing stress due to any reason like exercise or frequent travelling, and those with infections has higher egg counts and require more frequent de-worming.
